A solid bronze MAN Hamburg data plate from 1964.

This is a solid bronze date plate for a M.A.N. Hamburg manufactured 85kw ( 500.000 kcal/h) Water boiler.
It is mounted on a steel plate with copper rivets alongside a brass plate with boiler details.

The bauart number is correct.

However someone in the past chose to grind off the date and mill in a date of 1944 and add a waffenstamp to the brass plate. Implying that it was wartime and from a U boat.
Inspection under a microscope showed the differences in stamp and that the correct date was likely to be 1964.
Discussion with the MAN archive confirmed that the use of the name MAN Werk Hamburg did not occur before 1957. Hence it must be from 1964.

Hence we have filled the waffenstamp with solder and remarked the date with 1964 to return it to its close to original condition.

The piece weighs 1.6 kg and measures 23 cm x 13cm x 1 cm.

Pre WW1 Bristol Wagon Works Co Ltd hub cap

A completely original carriage hub cap in brass made by the Bristol Wagon Works Co Ltd.

This is the hub nut from a British Army cart which is clearly stamped with the two military broad arrows.
The hub nut secured the wheel to the axle and held grease inside to lubricate the shaft.
We have cleaned it completely back to the bare metal.
It was cast from brass by the Bristol Wagon Works Co some time between 1866 and 1889. After this date the company was renamed The Bristol Wagon and Carriage Works Co . Bristol made an extensive range of carts, carriages and train rolling stock.
Bristol had contracts to supply the British Army with wagons and it is mentioned in publications that they made several versions of the General Service (GS) wagon which were colloquially called in the Army "Bristol Carts".

The cap is Victorian manufacture and was definitely made before 1889. The later stamped numbers 1915 may mean it was used in WW1 or it may be an Army Serial No. from the 1880's.

The Brass hub cap sits on a block of bog oak which is older that the hub cap.
The oak has been shaped and hollowed out to form a box. The base is brass sheet with 4 plastic feet.
The box measures 10.5 cm by 8.5cm and is 7cm high. The hub nut is 9cm in diameter and fits into the hole in the top to form a loose fitting lid.
A useful pot to put small items in such as paper clips which are included.

WW2 AEC Marshall 644 British Army Truck Dataplate ex Dunkirk

This is solid bronze data plate made by Duple Bodies of London NW9.
It was made in 1939 as a data-plate for a GS (General Service) Truck Body. For use on a 14ft truck.

The War Department Contract number is specific to the manufacture of 100 AEC model 644 trucks for the British Army.

The AEC 644 was called the Marshall and ca. 1000 were made for the British Army from 1932 to 1941. It was a 3 ton 6 X 4 rear wheel drive truck with an open cab. It was powered by a 5.1 litre 4 cylinder petrol engine.

Duple was a coach builders in London who were noted for making buses.

The AEC Marshall 644 were mobilized in 1930 and were extensively used by the BEF at Dunkirk. Following Operation Dynamo to remove the troops from the beaches around 65,000 British vehicles were left behind. Many were disabled but due to the number left behind many were repaired and reused by the Germans.

The book on British Military Trucks in Wermacht Service by Vollert confirms the use of many captured British vehicles and states that a large number if not the majority of AEC 644 Marshalls were left behind at Dunkirk. It has several pictures of them being reused by the Wermacht. The last picture above is from the book and shows a Marshall in German use. To the rear of the cab is the wooden GS body and a data-plate is visible with the two screw heads on the side of the body.

This data-plate came from Russia so travelled a long way from Dunkirk in enemy use.

We have mounted it on a solid triangular piece of bog oak. So that it can sit on a desk or shelf.

It measures 7 inches long and 2.5 inches high - but on angled block it is 2 inches high and 2 inches deep

Vintage Automobile MG tappet cover

A part from a vintage MG motor vehicle engine

This is part of the rocker cover from an MG engine that was recovered from a canal

This is the top section fo the rocker cover and has a brass plaque detailing the settings for the tappets.

The cover section has been stripped back as it was very rusty. We have cleaned it and repainted it in black. It has been mounted on a piece of oak hard wood and the MG logo laser etched into it.

WW2 Allison Aero Engine Rocker cover relic section

A part from a WW2 Allison V-1710 aircraft engine.
This is part of the rocker cover from an Allison aircraft engine that was recovered from a crash site in Russia.
The aircraft was a Bell P-39 Air Cobra that was sold to the Russians under lend lease.
(as shown in the last image the engine was also used in the P40, P38 and early P51)

This is the end section fo the rocker cover and would sit above the rocker arm that we have for sale separately
There is a number on the small plate at the end.

The cover section has been stripped back as it had some fire damaged paint on the surface. We have degreased it and repainted it in black.
To the top we have added the Allison logo as shown on the front of the V-1710 manual.

The piece is intact but there is a crack and a raised section below the writing from the original crash.
A very nice piece for an aircraft or engine enthusiast.

WW1 U-boat submarine relic desk display

Bevel gear mounted on a bakelite base with small brass plaque that is marked U-48.
Gear is removable and also rotates freely on the bearing.
Several markings on the lower rim of the cog.

The WW1 U-boat U-48 was built in 1916 and had a short career with the German Navy (Kaiserlich Marine) before running aground on the Goodwin Sands in November 1917. She managed to free herself at the morning high tide but was spotted by Admiralty Minesweepers who forced U-48 back onto the sands. The exchange attracted a larger RN ship that attacked, The U-boat set charges and the surviving crew abandoned ship. She reappears regularly from the sand. There was salvage from the U-boat and a deck gun was displayed in Ramsgate for many years. We believe that this piece was salvaged in 1918/1919.

Given the browning of the bakelite and the use of materials we are comfortable saying that this is from the WW1 U-48. We have cleaned the upper surface back to the black bakelite.

The plinth measures 12cm diameter

Mounted in a hand turned Elm wooden frame and stnding on a hardwood base.

Rear is patterned to diffract the light.
